teenagersintokyo
"You seriously just discovered teenagersintokyo?!". Alas yes, today was the day my ears caught a whiff of this fashionably clad Sydney based quintet. Having just signed a deal with UK label Backyard Recordings, I predict these guys are heading in the same direction as New Young Pony Club. All's their missing is a Van She Tech remix and a slot on a sexy mobile phone advert. Can't help thinking they sound a little...no, a lot...like the now deceased The Organ, no?
As per the norm, Ohh! Crapp has already interviewed them.

Haunts
Men pampering themselves with moisturisers. The Labour Party embracing the free market. And now Indie bands turning all dance in this ever homogenising world in which we live. There was once a time when the two concepts were seen as polar opposites. These days, it's not uncommon to find a band with its own in house remixing wing, al la Van She, Cut Copy...and Haunts.
On the one hand, the London based foursome deliver murky, blustering punk-funk which I find surprisingly danceable. While elsewhere, they produce bass heavy dance remixes, with nods in the direction of their 80's influences. They aptly describe it as "like Haunts with synths".
If you happen to have a ticket for T in the Park (that's Scotland, Americans!) this weekend, you'll be glad to hear they're playing the Friday on the Relentless stage. Go cut a rug and give them my regards.

MGMT - Electic Feel
My housemate is going to see Radiohead tonight and I'm jealous. Not because she's fortunate enough to be watching the splendidly dour, green minded (I hear the roadies are drinking from recyclable water bottles...yeah that should negate the leer jets) headline act, but more for the fact that the band that are ubiquitously described as being ones to watch, Brooklyn's MGMT (The Management) are in support. A week ago, I wouldn't have been so bothered. My reaction to the duo's if the 70's had electronica sound was lukewarm, although not entirely negative. New single Electric Feel and accompanying Justice remix however, kinda sorted my head out, revealing what all the fuss is about. Besides, any band able to wangle the line "Shock me like an electric eel" into the lyric sheet, gains my full support.

I wouldn't watch the Eurovision Song Contest if it weren't for Terry Wogan. His dry wit and realisation that the competition is nothing more than a political points scoring contest that has little to do with music makes for excellent viewing. But, alas, he's considering giving up the post of Mr Eurovision. This after Britain came last...again...and Russia came first...suspiciously. Tel! Please reconsider!
The video is for the Ortzroka track. Excellent vid.

Cut Copy - Remixed
It seems the remixes of various tracks of of Cut Copy's In Ghost Colours are leaking out all over the place:
This is the one I'd been waiting for, Knightlife's End Edit of So Haunted, which does exactly what it says, expanding on the tracks psychedelic-dance outro that was gagging to be remixed:

Aeroplane has gone the opposite direction with their remix of Hearts On Fire. I guess there was only one way to go with this track: chill it from an electronic behemoth and take to the land of disco-funk.

Home Video - I Can Make You Feel
I guess you could say that me and I Can Make You Feel it didn't exactly get off to the best of starts. I'm no fan of Radiohead, so it goes without saying that I have little time for Radiohead emulators. I am of course referring to the vocal tones of Collin Ruffino. That fact aside, I was more than satisfied with I Can Make You Feel it's slow, yet definite intensification, its seeming desire to make you feel slightly uneasy, and its nod towards the likes Massive Attack and Leftfield, of whom I’m more than sure make up the backbone of Home Video’s record collection. Dance music for the intelligentsia? 2.5 out of 5.

Cut Copy - So Haunted
In case you didn't know, Cut Copy have 'released' their much anticipated 'difficult second album' on their Myspace page for fans to stream. An innovative way of utilizing today's technology I'm sure, but it was one of those records, of which there are very few, which I was going to buy in its physical format, while relishing the interim period with hungry anticipation.
Of course you've already heard Hearts On Fire (leaked sometime last year) and current single Lights And Music, and if you haven't, then head back to your copy of Mojo magazine as your kind don't belong here. And by here, I mean the internet. But besides these two stellar tracks, the album contains one other stand out gem, So Haunted. A highly strung, guitar clashing intro/verse soon gives way to rich chords wrapped around a deliciously lush vocal hook. And just when you think they're tieing things up, So Haunted swiches effortlessly into rave mode with an outro that's just begging to be remixed. This has single written all over it.

I understand Cut Copy are touring with these kids. The Twelves remix is piss poor quality. That's in refrence to the bit rate, not the standard of the remix by the way:

Ah yes, two weeks off. No practice placements. No exams. No Assignments. You have no idea how good it feels to write that.
A word about the St. Andrew track. You may remember his winning Yelle remix as well as his Ocelot remix which was a runner up. If your expecting Forgotten to be similar, forget it. Imagine Aphex Twin with the visceral stylings of Four Tet and your about there.

Heart's A Mess (Ocelot Remix)
Wow, two posts in one day. For someone who generally post 10 times a month, that's something of a rarity. But y'know, with my recent good news regarding exam results (see previous post), I feel (cliche alert) I've had a weight lifted from my shoulders and with it, a new found zeal.
If I told you I loved Ocelot, would you be surprised. Well you shouldn't be. Their superb remixes that somehow manage to induce spontaneous waves of euphoria every time I listen are, at times of hardship, the highlight of my day. They sum it up best: "All the fun of Trance, without all that Trance". Just how I like my Trance music.
Currently pushing the Obama cause and playing out at pornstar birthdays, check out Ocelots latest remix:

The Joy Formidable
If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times: I posts a woefully inadequate amount of indie music. But hey, why should I? Most is a load of angst ridden bile driven by some Pete Doherty wannabe, or some over bloated guff you feel like you need a degree to understand.
The Joy Formidable are guilty on neither counts. Having been described as dream-pop by Radio 6 DJ Tom Robinson, and sounding like a cross between The Wombats and The Von Bondies, TJF operate as the perfect link between radio friendly 'guitar music' and post prime-time indie. Love it, love it, love it.
TJF are playing shows nationwide throughout March and April. Check out their Myspace page for specifics.

Advert Music
The cynical (and perhaps sensible) part of my personality believes music in adverts to be little more than a marketing ploy intended to endear the viewer to the product featured. Nonetheless, those annoying bits in between television programs have included some great music of late, whose quality (in the UK at least) has indeed endeared me to the products featured. Not that I could afford any of them.
