Haunts

Men pampering themselves with moisturisers. The Labour Party embracing the free market. And now Indie bands turning all dance in this ever homogenising world in which we live. There was once a time when the two concepts were seen as polar opposites. These days, it's not uncommon to find a band with its own in house remixing wing, al la Van She, Cut Copy...and Haunts.

On the one hand, the London based foursome deliver murky, blustering punk-funk which I find surprisingly danceable. While elsewhere, they produce bass heavy dance remixes, with nods in the direction of their 80's influences. They aptly describe it as "like Haunts with synths".

If you happen to have a ticket for T in the Park (that's Scotland, Americans!) this weekend, you'll be glad to hear they're playing the Friday on the Relentless stage. Go cut a rug and give them my regards.

Hearts On Fire Remixes

It seems that In Ghost Colours highlight, Hearts On Fire is rapidly turning into this years D.A.N.C.E. On the plus side there's always at least one great remix in the pile, but at the same time it can become a bit of a shitter as I invariably end up hating the original. This presents me with something of a conundrum. Do I jump of the bandwagon and get trigger happy with these remixes, or do I hold fire to help maintain the integrity of the original...inflation leads to devaluation n'all that.

Guess I have to head somewhere in the middle. That's what blogging's all about these days innit, perpetuating the hype. I want in.

MGMT - Electic Feel

My housemate is going to see Radiohead tonight and I'm jealous. Not because she's fortunate enough to be watching the splendidly dour, green minded (I hear the roadies are drinking from recyclable water bottles...yeah that should negate the leer jets) headline act, but more for the fact that the band that are ubiquitously described as being ones to watch, Brooklyn's MGMT (The Management) are in support. A week ago, I wouldn't have been so bothered. My reaction to the duo's if the 70's had electronica sound was lukewarm, although not entirely negative. New single Electric Feel and accompanying Justice remix however, kinda sorted my head out, revealing what all the fuss is about. Besides, any band able to wangle the line "Shock me like an electric eel" into the lyric sheet, gains my full support.

I wouldn't watch the Eurovision Song Contest if it weren't for Terry Wogan. His dry wit and realisation that the competition is nothing more than a political points scoring contest that has little to do with music makes for excellent viewing. But, alas, he's considering giving up the post of Mr Eurovision. This after Britain came last...again...and Russia came first...suspiciously. Tel! Please reconsider!

I couldn't give a damn who else remixed Madonna's 4 Minutes, not a damn. The only remix I was going to entertain listening to was Jacques Lu Cont's. Why? Well, not only does he poses a near perfect back catalogue of remix work, he was also the producer/brains behind Madonna's 2005 album Confessions On A Dance Floor, an I view with such I regard.

Fred Falke

I always had Fred Falke down as kind of the poor mans Alan Braxe. I know those guys collaborate a lot, but I just assumed that Braxe was the brains behind the operation. I guess I couldn't have been more removed from the truth, as Falke has single handedley remixed Hot Chip, Ladyhawke and The Whitest Boy Alive (among others) celebrating his bass playing roots, creating some of the most compelling remixes of the year so far. Are we headed for an album release?

Brooklyn based independent label No Love Lost Records (or NLLR) are currently swamping the scene with their high class Mixtape Project. You may remember I posted Mat Payne's mix the other day. Well now it's the turn of Anglo-French duo Chewy Chocolate Cookies whose volume seems to be inspired by, well, themselves.

Cut Copy - So Haunted

In case you didn't know, Cut Copy have 'released' their much anticipated 'difficult second album' on their Myspace page for fans to stream. An innovative way of utilizing today's technology I'm sure, but it was one of those records, of which there are very few, which I was going to buy in its physical format, while relishing the interim period with hungry anticipation.

Of course you've already heard Hearts On Fire (leaked sometime last year) and current single Lights And Music, and if you haven't, then head back to your copy of Mojo magazine as your kind don't belong here. And by here, I mean the internet. But besides these two stellar tracks, the album contains one other stand out gem, So Haunted. A highly strung, guitar clashing intro/verse soon gives way to rich chords wrapped around a deliciously lush vocal hook. And just when you think they're tieing things up, So Haunted swiches effortlessly into rave mode with an outro that's just begging to be remixed. This has single written all over it.

Why the hell did no one tell me about this! Can't complain really. I guess I'm the blogger here (excuse my arrogance, but I really know what's best). Felix Da Housecat of Silver Screen Shower Scene fame has had his recent single Radio given the once over by both postfunkers, The Infadels, and y'man from Tokyo, Shinichi Osawa. Both version do it for me but I was stuck on a desert island with one (ah desert islands, the international rating system), I'd have to pun for Shinichi's gameboy sounding dream pop number:
